The chances today are about 14 in 100 that if an insured driver is injured in an auto accident in the United States, an uninsured motorist caused the accident, according to a study conducted by the Insurance Research Council. However, the problem varies widely from state to state and within states. In Connecticut, 11 percent of drivers are uninsured. The five states with the highest uninsured driver estimates were Colorado (34 percent), Mississippi (29 percent), Alabama (28 percent), New Mexico (27 percent), and California (26 percent). The five states with the lowest uninsured driver estimates were Maine (5 percent), North Carolina (5 percent), South Dakota (6 percent), Nebraska (7 percent) and Massachusetts (7 percent).
