At least 12 inches of insulation is needed to cut heat loss. In addition to the insulation, it is important to seal any air passages from the house to the attic that allow heated air to move into the attic. Frequently, these areas are found around chimneys, plumbing pieces, electrical wires and boxes. Once the flow of heat to the attic has been reduced, provide enough ventilation to remove any residual heat. Ideally you will need one square foot of free ventilation for every 150 square feet of attic space.
